    Lanvin Expansion Plans

    The new C.E.O of Lanvin, Paul Deneve, has finally spelled out his plans for expanding the brand. Lanvin, designed by the charming Alber Elbaz, is a favorite of fashion editors but the product is very expensive and very hard to find.

    Early last summer, I was told by an investor that the company's owners, the Korean Shaw Lan Wang, and her son, Sing-Ming Chu, had been looking for backing, which was hard to come by as rights to sell in lucrative Asian market had been signed away to a license partner long ago.

    They found an alternative -- last August they sold the rights to produce Lanvin fragrance and cosmetics to Inter Parfums for 22 million Euros. The article in today's WWD makes no mention of a partner in Asia, but does say that global partners are part of the forthcoming growth plan.

    To take two key money makers -- Asia (if it is true) and Beauty -- out of the equation, was a bold move. The company now says it will focus on opening about 12 boutiques in the next year and on improving production of the women's line (which is currently 65 percent of sales), on building the increasingly popular men's business (sales of which were up 80 percent for Spring, but from a small base), on building its new categories, bridal and the lower priced 22 Faubourg label and, perhaps most promising of all, expanding the last real money-spinner it has, accessories.

    If there was ever a designer who deserves success it is the chubby and charming Elbaz whose shows can delight the toughest of critics by doing the one simple thing so many designers find so challenging -- creating clothes that make women smile.

    I'm not obsessed with collecting shoes and bags

    I have been thinking to myself lately, about the seemingly obsessive behaviour many exhibit when it comes to shoes and handbags. Ok we all need handbags and shoes and yes I have lots, but my collection is tiny and relatively low value in comparison to many who have thousands of pounds worth of shoes. Yes I agree that I can't help lusting after the latest Louboutin heels or Hermes Hadbag, but I would never spend this amount of money on a pair of shoes or a handbag, not unless I won the lottery. I like to buy a pair or two of reasonable quality shoes each season and would never buy cheap non leather shoes or handbags but it just isn't worth getting into debt for the latest fashion. In our consumer driven culture, fashion and particularly shoes and handbags have almost become a new currency for measuring social standing and class.Perhaps the desire most women feel for shoes and handbags is something to do with the fact that they are solid and longlasting, valuable and recognisable as an expensive fashion item. They are therefore an investment aswell as a status symbol. Perhaps it is just the ability of a lovely pair of shoes or a beautiful handbag to transform an otherwise plain outfit or the beautiful workmanship that is almost always found in an expensive pair of shoes or a handbag.For me the importance of shoes and handbags is that without a quality handbag and pair of shoes, I feel a bit of a mess. The shoes need to be comfortable otherwise, I end up hobbling about or stumbling in them- this just ruins my day and completely zaps my confidence. My handbag is almost like an extension of my arm, it never leaves my side when I am out of the house and contains some of my most important possessions without which I couldn't possibly survive.I don't really partake in the whole labels and brand thing for shoes and handbags but prefer just to get fairly well made leather shoes and handbags which are comfortable, practical, look great and will serve me for many seasons to come.

    I love the Fendi B Bag, even though every other person walking down the street has this memorable bag. The oversized B. buckle Fendi handbags made their smashing first appearance on the spring 2006 runway, and season after season the designers over at Fendi attempt to dazzle us with a new dressing. This one in particular is the Pink Patent B-Bag. I do love the color pink but the fact that this bag is dressed from head-to-toe in this color, in my eyes it’s slightly shy of dazzling me. Don’t get me wrong, I do l-o-v-e the color pink (I own many pink bags) but there is just too much bubble gum pink (looks slightly plain / boring). However, if this bag was available in a two-tone color pattern I probably would fall head-over-heals. It is after all the lovely original Fendi B. Buckle Bag.


    Need to intensify your look for the day? Well look no further. Fendi just came out with a bunch of new neon wallets that will surely brighten up your summer outfit.

    The latest sighting of Ash and her fav tote was yesterday, while hanging out with her sis in Malibu California.side note: If you love this tote keep an eye out. I couldn’t find one up for sale at the moment, but every now and then one pops up, usually carrying a price of around $9k. Really this Fendi crocodile handbag is the best investment ever and will truly last you for years, even decades to come.

    Art meets fashion at BurJuman





    BurJuman, the residence of high fashion, is once again hosting Art and Fashion, the two-week long culmination of fashionable art.

    A distinctive addition to the innovative exhibits in BurJuman is the Jean Paul Gaultier photographic exhibition in the South Village. In conjunction with Esmod, the French Fashion University, BurJuman will host a unique photographic exhibition capturing Jean-Paul Gaultier through the eyes of photographer Jules Jarry. This iconic photo exhibition is complimented by a modern collection of Gaultier's latest fashion, which has been made available by Saks 5th Avenue. Concurrently, shoppers can celebrate 175 years of Longines masterpieces and enjoy the visual display with an exhibit by the premier Swiss watch company, showcasing some of their finest work spanning over a century.

    Opposite the Information desk on the 1st floor, shoppers will also enjoy an excellent display of shoes created by English designer, Hetty Rose. Hetty will bring to the spotlight the shoe-making process that is based on the theory of re-using and re-working vintage materials in a creative and sustainable way, and accordingly hand making shoes to fit.

    Another exciting dimension under the Art & Fashion 2007 umbrella will be a fashion exhibition by seven haute couture designers who will creatively introduce the new product brand of Swarovski, CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Element, in the Observatory opposite Virgin Megastore. The seven Dubai-based designers will interpret the seven brand values in their elaborate creations by expressing the underlying messages of the new Swarovski brand. These creations will be presented for the first time to the general public before being taken to an exclusive by-invitation only VIP auction at the beginning of year. All proceeds will go to a Middle East charity organization.

    The ultimate culmination of the Art & Fashion 2007 will be Runaway Art, Dubai's avant-garde fashion show in the Observatory, opposite Virgin Megastore. For the second year in a row, BurJuman will highlight amateur and professional Dubai-based designers who have submitted designs for creation. The designers will see their work on the catwalk on December 12th, with prominent judges selecting the winning design during the competition on December 13th.
    Art and Fashion 2007 exhibits will be on displays daily in BurJuman from December 1-14, 2007 from 10am to 10pm.

    FBI: Accused tax manager liked Chanel

    WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- FBI agents say they found a treasure trove in the home of a District of Columbia tax manager accused of stealing millions from the government.Harriette Walters, arrested in a predawn Nov. 7 raid, allegedly spent $1.4 million at Neiman Marcus on her district Office of Tax and Revenue salary of $81,000 a year, The Washington Post reported Saturday.


    In the raid on her modest home, FBI agents said they seized 90 expensive purses, 47 of them made by Chanel, the famous French house of couture, the Post reported. The FBI, in an inventory filed Friday in federal court, said it also seized a Rolex watch, glassware by Steuben, a Faberge egg and a 2006 Mercedes, the Post reported.Walters, 51, is accused of masterminding the biggest fraud ever perpetrated against the district government. Prosecutors said the loss could exceed $30 million, much of which has been spent or spirited away, the Post reported.

    Made in China: Designer handbag fashion totally misunderstood

    Wow! What’s all this garble about “everything” made in China being counterfeit or fake? Do people understand the design and manufacturing process? Or, are they just determined to squabble about one of the manufacturing industry’s greatest resources?


    True, there’s been a lot of media about children’s toys being manufactured poorly. Shame on China for the mess they’ve created. They’ll fix the problem, or they’ll lose business. We all learn from our mistakes, right? Or, at least the smart folks learn. And, let’s face it, China is no dummy!


    China has been manufacturing most of the clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories stocked in all the major department stores throughout the world for many, many years. And, this is not going to fade or go away. China offers low-cost labor for low-end to high-end designer handbags, clothing and just about anything around the house.


    Most people don’t understand the truth about the Made in China label. China has been producing most of the Designer Merchandise sold in the USA for very long time. Why? Because the price to manufacture in China keeps prices as low as possible for consumers. People complain about the high price tags on designer handbags, clothing, shoes, and accessories. If the same item made in China was made in the USA or Europe the prices would be doubled or tripled.


    If the Hermes Birkin bag was assembled by hand in China instead of France, the price would not be $7,000.00 each. If Italian leather was sent to China for the assembly of Prada handbags, the prices would not be $3,000.00 each. Please put things into perspective.


    Burberry’s new management decided to use China for some of its assembled manufacturing needs and people went crazy. The thought of using a designer handbag made in China is misunderstood, misinterpreted, and misguided. The product made in China consists of the same quality of fabric as if it were made in the USA, France, England or Italy. The only difference is the designer item was assembled in China, or any other country offering a cheaper assembly manufacturing process.


    Most of the high-end Designers buy fabrics, leathers, and materials from the USA or Europe, pay a premium price for the high-quality fabrication, and then negotiate manufacturing in China. The materials and specifications are sent to China and made. Representatives from each of the Design Houses travel to China or other manufacturing countries to supervise the process. The finished products are shipped to the USA and other parts of the world for sale. It’s a process kept sweet and as simple as possible. It creates jobs and produces a global economy.


    Most consumers don’t know the designer manufacturing process or understand the details. They see a Made in China label and assume it’s a counterfeit item or fake. In reality, it’s not. It’s a moderately priced item made in a country which has been stereo-typed. And, we can’t blame the consumer because most of the junk, counterfeit and fake merchandise bearing the trademarks of others are made in China. Hopefully, the USA Customs Department working closely with the fashion industry will help end importing counterfeit goods.


    There are many countries available the fashion designers use to outsource labor. The high-end leather designer handbags with high-ticket price tags are made in the USA, Italy, London and France. The lower cost designer products are made elsewhere. Most designers offer collections every season which provide both high-end and lower priced products. For example, Ralph Lauren has five price and fabrication determined collections: RL Classics, Collection, Black Label, Blue Label and Lauren. Plus, many of the designers produce a separate collection for outlet stores and discount stores like Marshalls, TJ Max, Target, Walmart, etc.


    Some of the countries are more commonly used than others, and nonetheless they are countries with capabilities and low-cost labor. Some of these countries include, and are not limited to China, Turkey, Mexico, Romania, India and Portugal.


    Fashion designers who make designer handbags, designer wallets, designer scarves, designer clothing, hats, shoes, etc. use these countries because they can sell their products at affordable prices. Some of the fashion designers include, and are not limited to Coach, Burberry, Liz Claiborne, Robert Rodriquez, Max Studio, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Dooney & Bourke, Juicy Couture, Donna Karan, Anne Klein, Brighton, and many, many others.


    Just because an item is Made in China, it does not constitute fake or counterfeit. Let’s get this straight and communicated clearly. The reason the item was made in China is because at that point in time, the designer’s manufacturing team decided it was the best business decision to make for a cost-effective distribution of its product and collection.


    The next time you see a Made in China label on a designer handbag or accessory, and you purchased it from a reputable source, thank your lucky stars for the bargain price you paid. If you have any doubt, take the item to the designer’s boutique for authentication and peace of mind. Don’t assume just because it’s Made in China it’s a fake. Do you know what “to assume” does? It makes an ass out of u and me! So, please don’t ASS U ME.

    Is This It for the It Bag?

    There is too much inventory. Prices are absurdly high. And analysts are predicting a slowdown in a market that may have already passed its peak of irrational growth, in 2004. Even as prices have increased exponentially over the last three years, with buyers trying to get in on the ground floor of premier properties — the Paddington, the Muse, the Giant City — so, too, have reports of dwindling consumer confidence and a looming credit crisis that could potentially wipe out the value of Uptowns and Downtowns alike.



    Some people are concerned that a combination of volatile interest rates and the weakened dollar will ultimately cripple the market. Status handbags, you see, are a lot like housing. After the rise of the $1,000 purse, fashion’s equivalent of the $1 million studio, there inevitably comes talk of a backlash. Are we now living in a handbag bubble? “The new condo market today is comparable to the It bag,” said Stephanie Phair, the vice president for merchandising for Portero, an online auction house that specializes in the resale of luxury goods. “Every bag has a name. At least in New York, you see the same thing with all those condo buildings going up with valets, pools, dog parks and fancy names. At some point, people are going to decide that, in fact, what they’d like is to go back to the tried and tested, the classic prewar or the apartment on lower Fifth Avenue.” “The appeal of the It bag,” Ms. Phair said, “has started to wane.”



    Yet this is a moment when every bag seems to have, in addition to a price tag that could be confused with a ZIP code, a name that conjures up images of a wealthy enclave or a cast member of “Gossip Girl.” Heloise, Mathilde and Beata are bags by Chloé; Mariah, Camila and Elsa come from Marc Jacobs; the Uptown, the Downtown and the Muse are designs from Yves Saint Laurent, not buildings by André Balazs. An entire genre of slouchy handbags, described as “hobos,” may even strike some readers as unintentionally funny, if not slightly offensive, with their earnest descriptions and indiscreet prices — the Dolce & Gabbana Miss Perfect hobo, $795; the Celine Bittersweet hobo, $1,700; the Prada nappa gauffre Antic hobo, $1,750 (a crazy gopher hobo?) — for bags meant to look as if they once belonged to tramps.



    “Designers are just testing the laws of economics by pricing handbags higher and higher until people stop buying them,” said Lauren Goodman, the fashion director of Domino magazine. “They are so expensive, and drive you to buy a new one every season, which is kind of a horrifying thought.” Ms. Goodman is aware of the hot bags of the moment: the Prada leather styles that repeat the ombré patterns of the fall collection; the Marc Jacobs oversize clutch, carried by several editors during the spring collections; the YSL Downtown bag, which is shaped like a Chinese takeout container with a handle. “Some people still carry the Muse,” she said of another YSL style. “They think the Muse is hot, because they’re kind of behind.”



    But how does one afford to stay ahead? At the rate that designers are introducing new styles, that no longer seems possible, which has led to a shift in perceptions about status bags. “That whole phenomenon has changed,” said Julie Gilhart, the fashion director of Barneys New York. “Our customers seem to be looking for something more interesting. They don’t want to spend money on something everyone else has.” They don’t want a one-season bag. At the least, there is anecdotal evidence that the fastest-growing segment of the fashion industry, also considered its most lucrative because of its high profit margins, may not be immune to market exhaustion.



    Coach, the leading American handbag company, reported last month that its profit growth may slow this holiday season, setting off jitters among investors who view the brand as the entry-level threshold for luxury goods and an indicator for the broader health of the market. One could not avoid the sense of dread reflected in a Women’s Wear Daily headline this week: “A Chilly Wind Blows: Retailers Are on Edge About Holiday Season.” Handbag sales in the $7 billion United States market are expected to increase by 15 percent this year, according to the stock research firm Telsey Advisory Group. This is considered a disappointment, because the growth is about half as strong as the category’s 28 percent gain in 2004.



    “That $5,000 Marc Jacobs bag is so yesterday’s news,” said Elizabeth Kiester, the chief creative director of LeSportsac, which is developing a line of bags with Stella McCartney that will sell for under $350, beginning in February. “The luxury market is so over the top now that it is demented. I call them limo bags. I don’t have a limo.” It is probably a stretch to equate the slowing growth of handbag sales to It bag fatigue, but the statistics cited in Dana Thomas’s book, “Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster,” indicate that the American population is currently over-accessorized. Ms. Thomas cites a survey that showed by 2004, the average American woman was buying more than four handbags a year. Ms. Phair, of Portero, said there is not a strong resale market for fashion bags of the moment. “It’s not that we wouldn’t touch a Vuitton Murakami, but now it would be purchased by someone with a collector’s perspective, who loves Louis Vuitton and wants to own pieces from every season,” she said.



    In some circles, status bags have already become a punch line. A label called Slow and Steady Wins the Race recently produced a series of $100 handbags that recreated the shapes of iconic designs using inexpensive canvas — “a visual hyperbolic expression about contemporary fashion’s attention and obsession with designer handbags,” says its Web site. The latest versions are hybrids: the Hermesbirkin-Dior (a saddlebag with Birkin-style handles), the Balenciaga-Chanel (where hardware meets quilting) and the Chanel-Asfour-Gucci (a circular quilted bag with a red-and-green stripe). One is tempted, then, to declare an end to the It bag, but, then again, there were a lot of bags at the spring collections that seem destined for stardom: the Richard Prince bags at Vuitton, the Duffy at Marc Jacobs, the cute wavy-striped bags at Prada. Ken Downing, the fashion director at Neiman Marcus, is amused that there is even a question of a handbag bubble.



    “We certainly believe our customer is a fashion enthusiast, and our customers love handbags,” he said. At Neiman, the average bag sells for about $1,200, but Mr. Downing said there is no price resistance for a pièce de résistance. A special edition of 25 Chanel bags, made in crocodile for the retailer’s 100th anniversary last month, sold out in a snap. The price of each bag was $25,000.

    Big spenders plan a designer Christmas

    Luxury items are in hot demand this Christmas as consumers shrug off the cooling housing market, interest rate rises and credit squeeze to splurge on designer handbags and fine wine. Research published on Tuesday by Deloitte, the consultancy, suggests resilient consumer attitudes in the run-up to Christmas – particularly for luxury products – but warns that the determination to spend on the festive period could lead to a painful hangover in the new year.


    Some 19 per cent of consumers intend to purchase a designer handbag or shoes, according to a survey of 1,000 adults, while 16 per cent plan to buy food from a farmers’ market – which compares with 6 per cent purchasing upmarket foods last Christmas. “The rich are getting richer at a faster rate than the less well-off,” said Tarlok Teji, analyst at Deloitte. “There is an underlying trend for ‘premiumisation’, or trading up.” In all, consumers intend to spend 7 per cent more on Christmas gifts, socialising and food and drink, the report found.


    Price has also diminished in importance for shoppers deciding where to shop. In 2005 some 37 per cent of consumers listed price as a main reason for choosing a particular store; last year it fell to 23 per cent and fell further to 20 per cent this year. “Value for money” has declined as a reason over the same period, while “convenience” has risen from 50 per cent of shoppers in 2005 to 62 per cent this year – evidence, according to Deloitte, of our so-called “cash rich, time poor” society.


    Deloitte decided to repeat its survey this year after concerns that spending would be hit by the credit squeeze. But the November survey differs little from the September version, finding that consumers intend to spend an average of £706 compared with £662 a year earlier, or £33.6bn overall. But Mr Teji warned that, although Christmas should defy doom merchants, the following months might tell a different story: “It could be the last hurrah before ... a downward trend.” One company more sensitive than most to a potential retail hangover is Majestic Wine, which reported interim results on Monday.


    Tim How, chief executive, noted “challenging” trading conditions, but said customers’ thirst for fine wines was continuing unabated. “Last week somebody in our Mayfair store bought an Imperial [6 litres] Latour 88” for £2,500, he said. If growing expectations of a serious slowdown do become reality, retailers are aiming to supply so-called luxury products for less.


    Asda intends to make “the inaffordable affordable” by selling cheap truffles grown on a farm in Pontefract, Yorkshire. The only catch is that there will be a three- to five-year wait before the truffles will be ready to be harvested. In the meantime, luxury lovers who have fallen on hard times can rely on Lidl, the German discount chain that has been supplying cheap food to the UK since 1994. For a second Christmas, Lidl’s lobsters are selling for less than £5 each.
